Land of art and history, Burgundy has a historical and religious heritage dating back to the Gauls and Romans (Alesia, Autun, Cluny). Terre de Nature (Regional Parks of Morvan) which has many navigable waterways conducive to river tourism, it is also a region of vineyards, renowned for its Grands Crus (Pommard, Nuits Saint Georges) which accompany a generous gastronomy ( beef bourguignon). Burgundy, between the north and south of France, deserves more than a passing stop:

This wine growing country, which has always been crisscrossed by travellers and today is well serviced by TGV trains, owes its wealth to its religious and political history.

It is impossible to walk very far without coming across a vine that belonged to a powerful abbey, the most famous being Cluny, whose monastery was the most important Christian spiritual centre at one time, and Citeaux, which established up to 12.000 monasteries throughout the world. Today, Vezelay, Fontenay, Notre Dame of Dijon and many others testify to this prestigious past.

Travelling through the region is like leafing through a book of wine maps: Chambertin, Nuits Saint Georges, Pommard, Meursault, Montrachet, Vougeot, etc.

Vineyards and historic buildings are indelibly linked in Burgundy : in Beaune,the Hôtel Dieu and its famous wine sales, in Dijon, the Dukes’ Palace, in Autun, Auxerre, etc.

The people in Burgundy are very welcoming, opening their wine cellars and kitchens and offering such delights as bœuf bourguignon, cheese, spice bread, etc.

The Franche Comté brings together territories with very varied landscapes: forests, lakes, caves, waterfalls.
